THE ENERGY ABSORBING MONSTER FROM PLANET SPECTRON

The Energy Absorbing Alien Monster

From Planet Spectron

The spacecraft had been badly damaged by a meteor storm. Guidance systems were intermittent and life support was minimal. The alien creature knew he had to land somewhere soon or he would perish in the dark cold of space. He noticed a possible inhabitable planet ahead. It was a beautiful deep blue color due to the massive oceans that covered its surface. Scattered amidst the blue, were landmasses colored in shades of brown and green. This was as good a place as any to attempt to survive. He locked the navigational controls onto the prospective planet and would let the computer choose the most appropriate site for a landing. Hopefully most systems would remain fully functional until touchdown. He exited the control platform and entered his escape-pod just in case anything went wrong.

The alien felt the mother ship shudder and shake as it entered the earth’s atmosphere. The reverberations penetrated the escape-pod and he hoped the titanium hull would withstand the trauma. The on-board computer detected that the outer hull was breaking up and ejected the escape-pod. The alien felt his protective enclosure eject from the remnants of the larger craft. A sudden calm fell upon his environment as his small tubular ship entered the cloud canopy of the earth. He looked out of the small round window of his small enclosure and saw the destruction of the ship he had called home for centuries. Like a bullet gone wild the escape-pod streaked through the morning sky.

U.S. Defense radar picked up the UFO on the screen. Jets were scrambled and armed forces alerted. They would be ready and waiting when the visitor from space arrived.

The alien emerged from his blackened craft. It had served its purpose but it was useless now. His green-leathery figure stood over twenty feet tall on the sandy beach. He heard a sound of rushing wind and turned. The shell landed directly in his chest and exploded with a vengeance. He was knocked back with the blast and winced with the pain as he absorbed the full impact of the explosion. He got to his feet and felt pulsing power flow through his yellow veins as the energy of the attack was absorbed by his epidermis and distributed throughout his body. Two more shells impacted his impenetrable frame and he grew stronger with each successive attack. He surmised that he was an intruder on this planet and in an attempt to destroy him these feeble creatures were only making him stronger. He knew he would survive and possibly even thrive on this planet. The aggressions against his body brought momentary discomfort, but in the end only increased his strength and resolve. He would overcome in the end, victory and survival was assured.

Now you’re probably wondering what in the world this story of an alien from another planet crashing on earth has to do with anything of spiritual significance. Well hang with me for a moment and I will explain. When you consider we are told in scripture to consider ourselves as aliens in a foreign land (1 Peter 2:11), that we fight in a spiritual war (2 Corinthians 10:4), and that the attacks, struggles and testing that we face can make us stronger (Romans 5:3-4, James 1:2-4) you may begin to understand there are some reasons for my imaginary story. We aren’t leathery green aliens from the planet Spectron, but we are strangers in this world who belong to a King who lives in another realm, heaven. We aren’t bombarded with bombs and bullets, but we do have an evil adversary who shoots fiery darts and temptations at us. We live in a hostile world full of sin that often ravages us with all sorts of problems. We still possess a fleshly body, which can acquire disease. Some individuals who live among us are perfectly at home on this world and facilitate the plans of Satan as they do evil against us. We are children of the light. When the world, the flesh and the devil bombard us, we can absorb the trauma and damage in three ways. We can rely on the Holy Spirit who lives within us, trust in Jesus who saved us and place our trust and faith in our Heavenly Father who loves us. These attacks and struggles are painful, difficult and arduous, but if we persist in our faith we become spiritually stronger.

Paul illustrates for us this struggle we endure in 2 Corinthians 4:7 10 where he says, “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.” Just like the green alien in my silly story, we are hit from every side at times in life, knocked down, hurt and wounded, but we get up in the power of the Holy Spirit and go on in the faith. If we are grounded in the cross of Christ, we absorb the traumas and attacks in life and become even stronger in our commitment to our Savior and His Kingdom. But I don’t want to trivialize the pain and hurt we endure. Perhaps a true story will illustrate how deep the hurt can be, but how great the glory God can receive when we overcome adversity. Consider the story of Sue Lindsey.

Sue lived in Montgomery, Alabama while going to college. She had a part-time job at a local hotel where she worked to help with the costs of school. She was a devout and dedicated Christian. One night two men approached her during work and forced her into their car. She was driven to a remote location, robbed and repeatedly raped. The men left her handcuffed to a tree for hours into the night where she was found finally at 2:00am. This horrible ordeal nearly destroyed Sue’s life. She found it hard to function normally. She lost her job at the hotel and dropped out of school. She felt bewildered, wounded, lost and out of focus. This attack on her was physical, emotional, psychological and spiritual. But hear in her own words how she survived the experience and grew stronger in her faith because she allowed God to work in her life.

“After this experience I spent a great deal of time thinking about God. I searched and I prayed for understanding. I longed to be healed. My spirit and faith were sorely tested. My spiritual journey in the months that followed was painful but also wonderful. God allowed me to profit from an awful and devastating event. So many good things are in my life now. I have wonderful friends, most of whom I would never have met or known if it were not for this experience. I have a job that allows me to work with and serve crime victims. I have a deeper relationship with God. I’m spiritually wiser and more mature. I’ve been blessed beyond what I can tell in these pages and I’m very grateful. Romans 8:28 came alive in my life.”

Sue now has a ministry speaking to groups about God’s mercy and healing. What Satan intended for evil, God used for good because Sue trusted in her Savior and allowed the Holy Spirit to work in the situation. We have our trials and ordeals just like Sue and Paul reminds us in Romans 8:37 39 where our victory comes from when he says, “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Possibly a prayer that Pastor Mike Breaux prayed at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes Camp when he accepted Christ as his savior illustrates the sufficiency and strength we have in Christ when He is our Lord and Master. We each should consider praying this prayer when we are attacked and assaulted, discouraged and distracted, tempted and tested.

“I am a part of the fellowship of the unashamed. I have Holy Spirit power, the die has been cast, I have stepped over the line, the decision has been made, I am a disciple of Jesus and I won’t look back, let up, slow down, back away, or be still. My past is redeemed, my present makes sense, and my future is secure. I’m finished and done with low living, sight walking, small planning, smooth knees, colorless dreams, tamed divisions, mundane talking, cheap giving and dwarfed goals.”

We have victory in Christ in EVERY battle and experience we live through. Nothing can defeat us because God is our Commander in Chief with all the resources and skills necessary for us to bring Him glory and honor. Be encouraged that no matter what you are going through that Christ is more than sufficient to enable you to not simply cope, but to survive and grow stronger no matter what comes your way.

2 Corinthians 9:8

“And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.”

2 Corinthians 3:5

“Not that we are fit (qualified and sufficient in ability) of ourselves to form personal judgments or to claim or count anything as coming from us, but our power and ability and sufficiency are from God.”
